Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena
pelham, alabama
The City of Pelham built a unique Civic Complex in the 1990s to house both a conference center, a professional hockey arena and an ice practice rink. The City charged us with an exterior renovation project, along with a finishes refresh of the conference center.
The primary challenge with the facade renovation was designing a more pedestrian-friendly approach to the ice arena, which is located on the facade of the building that faces the primary road frontage but is on the side away from the parking lot. We removed a meandering, narrow driveway and narrow sidewalks and created a plaza to allow free movement of pedestrians. Removable bollards allow for EMS and vendor access to the plaza but prevent cars from circulating. Existing stormwater was reconstructed, roof drainage was improved, landscaping was re-imagined and signage was redesigned. All exterior finishes were painted or replaced, and lighting was updated to LED.
The Civic Complex is located across the street from BaseCamp at the Canopy (another BAS project) and shares parking with Live Nation’s Oak Mountain Amphitheater. This renovation was a part of the City’s work to improve their entertainment district.
