Seagrove Beach, Florida

An addition and complete transformative renovation to a 1980’s two-story vacation home sited on the Gulf of Mexico, adjacent to the town of Seaside. The design intent was to provide the owner with a setting for relaxation and entertaining, maximizing the use of the 75’ Gulf lot. Living spaces were opened up to the views on both floors, and natural light into the house was increased.

A new materials palette was selected along with new windows and doors. Finishes were chosen for their appropriateness to the beach setting yet more suited to the taste of the owner than what is perhaps more typical of a “Hwy 30-A” vacation home.

The design provides the Owner with a setting for relaxation and entertaining, maximizing the use of the 75-foot lot along the Gulf Coast. Living spaces are opened up to the views on both floors increasing natural light into the house. The original lower level of the house consisted of the primary entry foyer into a dead-end hallway leading to four bedrooms, resulting in a dormitory setting. This level now opens up to allow the view from the front entrance to extend all the way through to the gulf for a dramatic arrival experience. Relocated bedrooms and baths achieve the open plan and create a small living space on the Gulf side. The design and new location of the stair extends the entry’s openness upward into the second floor living spaces. On the second floor, after removing an underutilized crows nest and spiral stair, the useable floor space and corresponding views are expanded, all while increasing the sense of space and light coming through the re-imagined light well. An updated materials palette along with new windows and doors brings a fresh aesthetic to this home. Finishes were chosen for their appropriateness to the beach setting yet more suited to the Owner’s taste than what is perhaps more typical of a beach vacation home.
